4H 2007 Season Another successful year has been completed for the Ohio's first Alpaca 4H group, the "MIGHTY MICRONS". This year the youth had the input and tutelage of many excellent individuals but we would like to especially thank Sharon for all her hard work. We'd also like to congratulate this years ribbon winners and have loved how much each has grown through out the year. Now it is time to return to school to begin the New Year. But don’t worry; the activities will begin again soon enough. Great job by everyone!!!

Another Great OABA 2005 Show !!! Well everyone – it was another great show season, which was ultimately wrapped up by our home favorite the OABA competition. It’s always bitter sweet as we love the show and seeing all our friends very much, but it signifies the end of another years show season as winter sets in and we go into a bit of a hibernation until spring and all the new Crias starting to arrive. We were, again, blessed to have won or placed in every event we entered. Thank you all for your patronage, purchases, companionship, and fellowship. Continue to watch as we continue to bring new offerings to market and run our yearly specials. And as always – if you have a question or proposal, call and we’ll see what we can put together. Until then have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas season !!!

New Building for the Mighty Micron 4H Alpaca Pac The Lake County Fair is a whole lot drier this year – at least for the Alpaca 4H and Alpaca exhibitors. After a lot of hard work, planning, and the generous gifts of many contributors the Alpaca 4H Pavilion is a reality. The beautiful 40 x 60 foot freestanding pavilion style structure is up and the Mighty Micron Alpaca Pack has a permanent home on the fairgrounds directly across from the 4H display Building. This is a great addition for the fair as they are renovating many of the areas to give the fair a new look. The turnout was great and the kids did great at there events. Everyone came home with something. Top honors went to Michael Reeder / Rachael Means for best Project, Pam Baster / Stacy Means for Showmanship Class and Scott Platt / Rachael Means for Obstacle Class. If you missed them this time around join us at the fair next year – you’ll be glad you did. If you want to join the 4H call Kim Platt the 4H Leader at (440) 259-3564to find out more.

Mighty Micron 4H Alpaca Pac The Mighty Micron Alpaca Pac has been hard at it again this year. The team has put an exceptionally strong showing forth this year with all the youth bringing home ribbons of their own. Shown here are a few of this years participants, but not all in one place at once as it’s hard to get them to stand still. GREAT JOB GUYS AND GALS !!!!

Public Seminars Now Being Given Alpaca Showmanship Skills Awareness Kim, a National Champion Handler, with her many skills and abilities as a mentor of new alpaca farmers has taken to the road. This year marks the first of her presentations to the public on a number of subjects. She’ll be providing these hands on teaching seminars at several shows this year. So look for her to be lecturing at seminars in many of your favorite shows. If she’s not on your venue, then ask your show providers to see about scheduling her in the future. This year her initial presentation will be on “Alpaca Showmanship Skills Awareness”. This seminar will outline the skill areas that many exhibitors can use to greatly improve performance scores for both their alpacas’ as well as the showperson for Halter Class as well as Performance Class. This will include increasing awareness of alpaca owners’ responsibilities and conduct with respect to their animals both in and out of the showring. For a full Synopsis of the course and it’s cost, contact us at our email or snail mail addresses. Or just call to talk about your specific needs as we can tailor some aspects of the material to cover any perceived or desired need in depth.

Local Schools Tour Our Alpaca FarmWell, once again another class of happy school kids were treated to a field trip at our Alpaca Farm to learn about these interesting creatures. The children got to see and learn about the various things made from alpaca fiber including a shorn blanket from one of the animals and of course the alpacas themselves in their full fleece. Juice was served, and everyone was made comfortable on the best hay bales available for demonstrations. The questions were insightful as always from our local youth and everyone had plenty of hands-on time, too... The alpacas were as curious about them as they were about the alpacas - but then aren't they always... Whether large or small, two legs or four, they all had a great time. We look forward to our next encounter.

Kim Platt of Madison, Ohio, talks with Scott's Royal Gold before entering the ring in the halter competition at the alpaca show at the Butler Fairgrounds last weekend. Dr. Julio Sumar, who traveled from Peru to serve as the halter and fleece judge, praised the yearling's fleece as having the "nicest crimp" he had ever seen. The crimp is the zigzag pattern in the fleece revealed by gently parting it.
